Why do homosexuals say god hates them?

My best friend is gay and he says God hates him. He is Christian like his mother and she used to beat him for being gay like it was a choice. He has been taught for years that no matter how much he prays he will go to hell for being gay. I feel bad because I can't get through to him that God would never hate him for that.
